We are advocating the rights of the First Nations to enjoy and control their ancestral territories. We advocate for the rights of First Nations to enjoy and control their ancestral territories, ensuring they have a voice in land governance matters. Our work is deeply rooted in the unique context of Indigenous communities, recognizing their traditional knowledge and sustainable practices as essential components of effective land management.
Indigenous communities have a deep connection to their lands, which are integral to their cultural identity, livelihoods, and way of life. Our programs are tailored to respect and enhance this connection by ensuring that these communities are central to all land governance processes. By advocating for their rights and providing the necessary tools and support, we aim to empower these communities to sustainably manage their territories, preserve their heritage, and secure their futures. We work to ensure that the legal system recognizes and protects the customary land rights of Indigenous communities. This includes advocating for the inclusion of these rights in national laws and policies.
The existing model of 'fortress conservation', which removes people from their lands to create 'protected areas', is rooted in colonial legacies and continues to harm Indigenous communities today. Our advocacy focuses on conservation approaches that recognise and respect Indigenous roles and knowledge in the process. We support conservation models that acknowledge and honour Indigenous traditional systems of land use management, benefiting both nature and humanity. We promote alternatives to conservation practices that exploit natural resources while marginalising the people who have sustainably managed these lands for centuries.
Our vision is a conservation model where local knowledge, traditions, and decision-making power shape environmental stewardship. The goal is to ensure that conservation benefits both biodiversity and the people who have been its historical guardians. We advocate for conservation approaches that no longer subject Indigenous communities to perpetual land dispossession.See the links here.
